4 Questions to Ask Before Tinting Your Car Windows

Tinting your car windows is never just about having darker windows, even if that is all you are interested in. There are a number of factors that need to be considered before actually tinting your car windows, so it should never be an impulsive decision. That said, using a professional to tint your car windows is recommended, and can simplify the decision-making process through only answering a few critical questions that you should always ask.

What Tinting Options Are Available?

Going to the supermarket to buy a loaf of bread sees you presented with a number of options; from basic white or wholemeal bread, through to specialty breads, gluten-free options, and breads with added fibre or a higher grain and seed content. So, why would you want to use someone who only offers you a single car window tint option, take it or leave it? The most common difference between the various options available will be the darkness of the tint, expressed as a Visible Light Transmitted (VLT) percentage, with darker tints having a lower VLT percentage. A professional car window tint installer will also know local regulations regarding tints, which don’t only vary from region or country, but also from window to window.

What Are the Benefits of the Different Tinting Options?

The different options available to you won’t only offer different levels of darkness, each will also have different benefits. Some benefits such as heat reduction, glare reduction, and UV ray blocking are found in most window tints, but with different levels across the available options. Heat reduction is great for helping to limit your reliance on air conditioner, while blocking UV rays protects you and your passengers against harmful UV rays that damage the skin and increase the risk of developing skin cancer, while also protecting your car’s interior: UV rays can cause fading and cracking of upholstery and vinyl or leather interiors. But other benefits are unique to specific tints, and these could include a more robust adhesive bonding the tint film to the glass, through to scratch resistance or drastically increasing the strength of the glass, thus preventing vandalism or break-ins.

Does the Window Tint Come With a Warranty?

With proper care and maintenance, a high-quality car window tint can last 10-15 years. But this doesn’t exclude high-quality window tints from being affected by a manufacturing flaw or even a slip-up during installation. And while some of these might be immediately noticeable, others might only become obvious months or even years later. So, always ask if the window tint is covered by a warranty, how long the warranty is for, and whether it only covers the tint film or also the labour. That way you know you’re protected against anything going wrong with the tint as a result of a flaw in the film or the way it was installed.

How Much Will It Cost?

Most professional car window tint installers don’t list pricing on their websites, and the reason for this is because the actual cost differs from one client to the next, influenced by a number of factors. The key factors influencing the cost are the tint you select, the make and model of your car, the number of windows you are having tinted, along with whether or not your car already has window tint that first needs to be removed. That doesn’t mean you won’t know the actual cost until after you’ve had your car windows tinted, only that the installer needs this information from you before being able to give you a cost estimate.

The cost of using a professional car window tint installer might be a little more than that of a DIY tinting kit, but the long-term benefits to you, and your car’s interior are worth it, with the added peace-of-mind that comes from having a warranty included.
