In 2017, a major study by Monash University collated data from more than 7.5 million road incidents. The study included 400 different cars and had them matched up with a star rating between 1 – 5. It was found that the cars with the lowest safety ratings were more likely to seriously endanger the safety of the those inside the vehicle than the cars that had higher star ratings.
Michael Case, RACV’s Manager of Vehicle Engineering said that the difference between the most reliable vehicle and the worst is “enormous” and to note that “the better performing vehicles don’t necessarily cost more”.
